Frequently Asked Questions

How is income tax on salary calculated in Pakistan?

Salary tax is charged on a slab basis by the FBR. Your taxable annual income falls into a slab, and tax equals a fixed amount for the lower slabs plus a percentage on the portion of income above that slab's threshold. Income up to Rs 600,000 a year is exempt for both salaried and business individuals.

Do filers and non-filers pay different income tax?

The income tax computed on your annual income is the same whether you are a filer or a non-filer — the FBR slab rates do not change with filing status. What changes is withholding/advance tax on transactions: non-filers pay higher rates on things like bank withdrawals, property purchases, vehicle registration and dividends. Being on the Active Taxpayer List (filing your return) is what lets you avoid those higher deductions.

What is the difference between salaried and business/AOP rates?

If more than 75% of your taxable income comes from salary, the salaried slabs apply — these are generally lower. Otherwise the non-salaried (business individual and Association of Persons) slabs apply, which reach higher rates faster.

What is the surcharge on high incomes?

Individuals and AOPs with taxable income above Rs 10,000,000 pay a surcharge on top of their calculated income tax. It was introduced at 10% in Tax Year 2025. In Tax Year 2026 the salaried surcharge was reduced to 9%, and in Tax Year 2027 it was abolished for salaried individuals (0%). For business individuals and AOPs the surcharge remains 10%. This calculator applies the correct rate automatically for the selected year and income type.

Is this calculator official?

No. It is an independent estimation tool built on published FBR slab rates for the selected tax year. Actual liability can differ due to tax credits, allowances, rebates, exempt allowances, super tax and other adjustments. Always confirm with a tax professional or the FBR before filing.
